In order to create cinematic shots, lighting plays a key role and this is illustrated by the two portraits below.
Only one light source was used for both photos: An external flash with a softbox.
In the first photo, the light source is positioned centrally from above and creates relatively even lighting.
In the second photo, it is positioned at the top left, making one side darker and thus creating more contrast. This technique creates a more cinematic atmosphere and is therefore mainly used in film and studio photography.
This technique is called Rembrandt light or Rembrandt lighting, which creates a triangle of light under the eye. It owes its name to the Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn, who often used this characteristic technique in his paintings.
